Drone / UAS Operator
Drones & UAS
WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS
Commercial drone operators plan and fly missions to capture imagery, mapping/survey data, or inspection footage, then process that data (photogrammetry, GIS, thermal analysis) into a deliverable a client or agency actually uses. It's one of the lowest-barrier entry points in aviation — a Remote Pilot Certificate alone, without a traditional pilot's license, legally qualifies someone to fly commercially.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL
- ✓Take CTE drone/UAS courses if your school offers them (like this app's own CTEC track)
- ✓Start studying real FAA Part 107 aeronautical knowledge content — airspace, weather, regulations — now
- ✓Practice flying (even a low-cost consumer drone) to build real stick time and situational awareness
- ✓Learn the software side too: basic photo editing, mapping/GIS tools, or video editing make you far more hireable
REAL ROUTES IN — CHOOSE WHAT FITS YOU
CERTIFICATE
FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate alone
Pass the FAA Part 107 aeronautical knowledge test (minimum age 16) and you are legally qualified to fly commercially — no flight school or logged hours required by regulation, though real skill still takes practice.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
UAS/drone technology program
Community colleges increasingly offer UAS-specific associate degree or certificate programs covering flight operations, mapping, and data processing.
4-YEAR DEGREE
Aviation or UAS bachelor's degree
Useful for UAS program-management, engineering-adjacent, or research-track roles, though not required for most operator jobs.
DIRECT EMPLOYMENT
Hire on Part 107 + a portfolio
Many UAS employers (survey firms, construction companies, public-safety agencies) hire primarily on a current Part 107 certificate plus demonstrated flight experience and sample work, not a degree.
CERTIFICATION PATH
FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate — pass the aeronautical knowledge test at an authorized testing center; minimum age 16.
