Aerospace / Aeronautical Engineer

Engineering

WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS

Aerospace engineers apply math, physics, and materials science to design new aircraft/spacecraft or improve existing ones — running simulations, building and testing prototypes, and solving real structural, propulsion, or systems problems. Most aerospace engineering roles require a four-year degree, unlike several other aviation careers on this list.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • ✓Take the highest-level math and physics courses your school offers — calculus and physics are the real foundation
  • ✓Join a robotics, rocketry, or engineering design club if one exists
  • ✓Look for a STEM or engineering-focused summer program
  • ✓Start researching ABET-accredited aerospace/aeronautical/mechanical engineering programs early — admissions are competitive

REAL ROUTES IN — CHOOSE WHAT FITS YOU

4-YEAR DEGREE

ABET-accredited aerospace or aeronautical engineering degree

The standard route into most aerospace engineering roles — a bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited program.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

2+2 transfer pathway

Starting engineering coursework at a community college, then transferring into a 4-year ABET-accredited program, is a real and common cost-saving route to the same degree.

MILITARY

Military engineering commissioning programs

Military academy or ROTC programs can fund an engineering degree in exchange for a service commitment, with engineering roles available afterward.

DIRECT EMPLOYMENT

Engineering technician roles

An associate degree or technical certificate can lead to engineering-support/technician roles that work alongside engineers — real aerospace experience, though typically not the "engineer" title itself without a bachelor's degree.

CERTIFICATION PATH

No FAA airman certificate is required — the credential that matters is the accredited engineering degree itself; a Professional Engineer (PE) license is optional and typically pursued later in some engineering roles.
