SCENARIO 1 OF 2
You need a drone that can hover precisely in place to photograph a building from a fixed position for several minutes. Which design fits best?

Summarize the general history of unmanned aircraft, and distinguish between the major types of drones in use today: multirotor, fixed-wing, and VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing hybrid) designs.
Modern commercial drones are a genuinely recent development, but unmanned aircraft themselves have a much longer history — understanding both where the technology came from and the real tradeoffs between drone types helps explain why the industry looks the way it does today, rather than treating drones as a technology that simply appeared all at once.

ENTIENDE

“Drones generally come in three basic types — multirotor (hovers well), fixed-wing (flies farther, more efficient), and VTOL hybrids that try to do both — and choosing the right type depends on the specific mission.”
Ejemplo guiado
Consider a real-world mission choice: a farmer needs to survey a 500-acre field for crop health, while a real estate photographer needs to capture a few precise, hovering shots of a single house. The farmer's mission favors a fixed-wing drone, since covering that much area efficiently matters more than hovering precision; the photographer's mission favors a multirotor, since precise positioning and hovering matter more than covering a large area quickly.
Real Aviation Application / Aplicación real en aviación
This same set of tradeoffs — hover precision vs. range and efficiency vs. launch/recovery convenience — is exactly what real UAS operators (in agriculture, construction, public safety, and cinematography, all covered later in this domain) weigh when choosing equipment for a specific mission, not an abstract classification exercise.

Students sometimes assume "drone" only means the small camera quadcopters they're most familiar with. Use this lesson to broaden that picture early — military UAS, agricultural fixed-wing mapping drones, and delivery VTOL designs are all part of the same broader UAS category, just optimized for very different missions.
