Aircraft Performance and Density Altitude
DENSITY ALTITUDE
10500 ft
ISA standard temp at 7000 ft: 1°C — you set 30°C
RELATIVE TAKEOFF ROLL
RELATIVE CLIMB PERFORMANCE
Illustrative only — for real flight planning, always use the aircraft's actual performance charts, not a rule of thumb.
Hampton's .02 Cents: hot + high = thin air. Thin air is bad for everything an engine, prop, and wing do.
Drag elevation and temperature and watch density altitude respond, using the standard FAA rule-of-thumb approximation.
Define density altitude, explain how temperature and elevation both affect it, and describe why high density altitude reduces takeoff, climb, and landing performance.
Density altitude is one of the most common real factors behind general aviation accidents at high-elevation airports on hot days — an aircraft that performs fine at sea level on a cool morning can have dramatically reduced performance margins under different, but entirely normal, conditions elsewhere.

ENTIENDE

DILO EN INGLÉS · SAY IT IN ENGLISH
“Density altitude combines temperature and elevation effects on air density — on a hot day or at a high-elevation airport, an aircraft needs more runway, climbs more slowly, and needs more speed to land safely than it would in cooler or lower conditions.”
Ejemplo guiado
Consider a small training aircraft departing a mountain airport at 7,000 feet elevation on a hot summer afternoon: the density altitude might actually be 10,000 feet or higher, even though the airport's physical elevation is 7,000 feet. At that density altitude, the same aircraft that could climb briskly and use a short takeoff roll at sea level on a cool day might need a dramatically longer runway and climb much more sluggishly — the same aircraft, the same weight, but performing very differently because of density altitude alone.
Real Aviation Application / Aplicación real en aviación
Before any flight, especially from an unfamiliar or high-elevation airport, a pilot calculates expected performance using the aircraft's actual performance charts and the current day's temperature and pressure — this is a real, required part of preflight planning, not an optional academic exercise, precisely because misjudging performance on a high-density-altitude day has caused real accidents.

- How do I calculate density altitude if I only know pressure altitude and outside air temperature?
- What's the difference between using a performance chart and just estimating performance from experience?
- How does humidity affect density altitude, in addition to temperature and elevation?
Practice Responding
How does high density altitude affect an aircraft's takeoff and climb performance?
HAMPTON'S .02 CENTS
A useful phrase to help density altitude stick: "high, hot, and humid" all push density altitude up and performance down — alliteration helps students recall all three contributing factors (elevation, temperature, and humidity) rather than remembering only temperature and elevation.
